Elizabeth Saunders Staff Writer
As a part of National Crime Victims' Rights Week, family members of crime victims and survivors of violent crime came together for a candlelight ceremony Tuesday, April 25, at the Preble County Courthouse. The purpose was to remember friends and family members lost to violent crime.
Speakers at the service included Preble County Prosecutor Martin Votel who said, "We join together here tonight to recognize the devastating effects of crime. By joining together, we can help victims do the things they cannot do for themselves"
He then offered words of comfort from Eleanor Roosevelt who said, 'You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.'"
Votel praised the Preble County Victim Witness Program (PCVWP) by saying, "They have been helping victims and their families in Preble County through the criminal justice process for over 15 years. They are there to be a hand to hold, a shoulder to cry on. The simplest gesture or kind word can sometimes help us through the darkest times of our lives."
According to Votel, there have been three homicides in the past year in Preble County. Votel said this has been "a terrible and unusual year in terms of homicide in Preble County."
Bonnie Kayser, advocate with the PCVWP, agreed with Votel that this has been a particularly bad year, saying, "Before the three homicides this year, there had been only two others cases since 2000."
Tina Wasmuth, sister of murder victim Barbara Mullins said, "All I can think about is the torture and pain she felt in the last hours of her life. She had overcome so many obstacles with her will to go on. She survived being struck by a car at age 14, she survived four miscarriages, and she survived kidney failure and transplant, but she just couldn't overcome the hold her abuser had on her."
Roses, donated by Your Flower Shop, were given to family members as the names of victims and the dates of their deaths were read aloud.
Michael Baker, June 1999; Zachary Baker, November 2000; Lesa Buckley, July 1990; Kelly Camargo, August 1993; Daniel Conklin, September 1994; Michael Eby, May 1997, Harold Grubb Jr., October 1998; Paul Hays, March 2000; Nick Hegwood, April 2005.

According to PCVWP, the mission of National Crime Victims' Rights Week is to provide a time of nationwide remembrance, reflection and recommitment for crime victims and survivors and those who serve them in order to raise individual, victim and public awareness about the rights and needs of crime victims; the challenges that victims face in seeking help and hope in the aftermath of crime; and the positive impact that individuals and communities can have by providing services and support to victims and survivors of crime.

Ok, here is something to consider.. Colorado Springs has about 375,000 residents. Eaton has about 8,000 residents. In one year, Colorado Springs had a total of 12 murders, and Eaton had 4 murders. Colorado Springs had 3 times as many murders, BUT Colorado Springs also has 47 times as many residents. Seems to be an awful lot of murders up there in Preble County. AND those were only deaths deemed to be murders by coroners and authorities. What about "accidental" police shootings in Eaton? Like Helrigger...
Just wanted to mention that. It seems a bit odd.

Tai, there are more than that. As we post more cases, more deaths will be apparent
You are correct - there are not very good chances of survival in Preble County if you find yourself in the "right circumstance".

What the hell? I thought Rick Stoner's death was ruled self defense. If so what was he a victim of? ...STUPIDITY... I suppose that would explain the rumors of P.C.V.W.P. giving his son monetary benefits. HMMM So If i decide to kill someone and it go's wrong, My family can get paid for it.

I count 41 names in the list of homicides - is that just for Preble County? There are only app. 42,000 residents in the county...
Seems to me Clayton Helriggle's name should be there.

Just curious
Is a car accident consider a violent crime?

If there is no apparent reason for the accident, there are a mysterious second set of tire marks at the scene, and the victim suffered injury/death (r.i.p. Woody)...it is a violent crime.

I understand that. But if there are two cars involved and a person dies, is that a violent crime? I'm not trying to make a point or anything like that. It's just a question. I saw a name on the list and I thought that person died in a two car accident. I'm just simply asking if they consider that a violent crime.

I find it interesting that Joy Morningstar is listed instead of her married name of Joy Stewart? Why not hyphenate Morningstar-Stewart? She was also previously married and many may have known her by that name as well. My heart still goes out to her family. I knew the young lady and she wouldn't hurt a flea. I will never forget her or the two men killed on Consolidated Rd. BTW Joy was good friends with them too. Makes me wonder? It's a wonder I'm not 6 feet under too. The car accident victim...there is one that the family believed there was wrong doing by EMS. I believe that of course did not come out in their favor. Does it ever?

At least one victim was killed in a car wreck & there was no foul play to my knowledge. I don't want to disrespect anyone's family by pointing out who it is. And yes Clayton Helriggle should be included. I tried to have that happen & was shut down immediately. When some of the family members of other victims learned of it they took their loved ones Christmas tree ornaments & requested that their loved ones not be included in anything run by PCVW.

I am the neice of a murder victim in Eaton, Ohio. It is the triple murder that included one other man and one woman. As far as I can find there was no arrest ever made, even though, they have a suspect in their minds I would like anyone with anymore info that can be backed up with evidence of course to email me so that I can be more educated on the case and all the victims. I have been thinking about this alot as I was a little girl when the murders happened. I would like someone to help me with this, I want and we all deserve to have peace for our loved ones.

A lot of these people were not murdered it sounds like. Why has Eaton decided to post these names as homicide victims. Just because the families believe there to be foul play doesn't mean that it is a murder. Of course families are going to be bias. They are expected to be. My heart goes out to all of these families, but until a judge has ruled it a murder, maybe we shouldn't post them as murders. I'm sure a lot of the people involved in these situations wouldn't like to be called murders if the judge hasn't ruled them one. Not going to name any names.

''Victims Honored" I knew one of these victims personally. For those who didnt know Kelly Camargo she was a beautiful, good hearted, sixteen year old girl whose body was found in some woods just off the main road that runs through Camden. That was September 1993. The days turned to weeks and weeks turned to a month befor she was finally laid to rest. Still know one talked about what happened to her. I have thought about my good friend many times over the years. I often wonder how some one could get away with such things for so long. I know that out there some where someone knows what happend to this "honored victim".

Mindy Mull was my closest cousin. It has new been 15 years since she was murdered. I miss her today as much as or more than I missed her 15 years ago. She was an amazingly sweet and beautiful person.
In her case, he confessed to the murder. My heart aches as in two days will be the 15 year anniversary of the date she was killed. She was found a day later on July 4th...I will never forget the phone call I recieved from my sister and the world falling around me.
I miss my sweet Mindy, I always will! As a child I spent most Holidays with her...so this time of year is especially hard.
My heart goes out to all of the victims families here...regardless of if they were victims of violent murders or not. It's a pain that never goes away to lose someone.

I went to school with Kelly Camargo and I just found out about her death. They said it may have been a doing from Glen Pogers. I think this case needs to be reopened and go to Florida to talk with Glen about this. I found the address to the prison hes in and I will write this scum for for what he made done to Kelly. She didn't deserve this at all. I wish her family would put a facebook page about her to maybe bring in people who may know any little clue on this case! Justice for Kelly Camargo!

Hello,I have recently became alarmed by the hidden epidemic in America of the Missing murdered and unidentified people and unsolved murders. So,I have decided to try and do my very very small part to try and help, by doing the only thing I can do,and that is draw awareness to the crimes in the area of my hometown.I was completely appalled by the fact that Kelly Camargo's case has never been solved. That really seemed like a solvable crime because we had always heard there was an Eye witness to the last person she had been witnessed alive with.I always felt a connection to her case also because,I was a youth that ran around with an older crowd and went to bars before my 18th birthday and back then I was allowed to.Another reason is that I ran the north end and east side and it's bar's at the time she became a missing person.I knew her in passing, you know by face and she would be a few places I would be, like on Vine street or on Heaton street at Danny's aka Phillips.I am a few years older than she is, but,I now remember thinking that she was a very pretty young girl and I hoped she would hurry up and get her running over with out of her system before something ruined her.I should make that clearer, I meant before one of those older guys around there took advantage of her beauty and naivete and she ends up an alcoholic or addict or worse a prostitute. However I never expected for her to be killed. Those areas of Hamilton where we both ran around are dangerous, but then I was completely fearless.I was a fighter, a hell raiser and thought I could always take care of myself, after all, I was not a prostitute so I did not think I was on the radar of a Sexual Deviant/Serial Killer because I did no get into the cars of perspective tricks, well neither did Kelly and I am positive she thought she knew exactly what the weirdo's and men who wanted to hurt her looked like, just as I did.I am finding myself covered with goosebumps as I write this thinking of the naivete and boldness that drove me and all of the other young girls who were running those same areas at that time they to would have felt that they were absolutely sure they would be able to tell what Evil looks like.I was so stupid and took many many risks where it could have easily been me left in those woods instead of poor teen-aged Kelly. I have started a website to draw more attention to these cases in the Hamilton and Cincinnati and Tri-State area,to let other people know that some of these cases have never been resolved as I had wrongly assumed most had been.I was also alarmed by some the names of some of the missing because I had never even heard of before.I even asked my mother, father and other friends if they had heard of some of these missing people and they could not recall some of them either. So,this why I feel I need to do this. There can never be too much exposure when someone's loved one is missing or when the killer of the loved one is still out there acting like they have beat the system and will never have to pay. I would appreciate any and all information that anyone has available about Kelly Camargo and other cases. My special Email acct is chrismaccius1@gmail.com I moved from the Hamilton,Ohio area in 2001 and came back for 2 years then moved away again. My whole family lives there and it keeps growing and I want it to be better not worse.Thank You for any help and my thoughts are with the families.

HI, my name is Ryan and I was a good friend with Kelly Camargo. On 1/25/13 I found a Strange Question thread on Dabears.com website. www.dabears.com/anything_but_football/18125-strange_question.html ... I can no longer access the "Strange Question" page but It has someone with a (avatar) picture of a lunatic with blood on his hands nicknamed Strangerwithcandy11 talking about Kelly's murder, giving details of the crime, asking for advice and wondering if the police have any DNA evidence, etc. After someone suspiciously asks him what color his hair is and what color car does he drive he jokes about being a suspect among other things. After arguing with the suspect he found out who I am and threatened me and people I know who live in Hamilton. I mailed the thread to coldcase@butlersheriff.org and to the Preble County Sheriffs Department but maybe it didn't get through. Please help me push this new lead! I want this mans DNA swabbed. Thank you

hi ryan this is kelly camargos aunt i am on my husbands account do you think you can email me? They may want to look at D. V. again. I haven't lived in Hamilton in many years but the farm that Kelly was found on, at the time belonged to a family member of mine. I know for a fact D. V. had been there in 1990. From what I understand. He couldn't be connected to the property.
