I would like to know the details of the death of Bruce Whitesell who allegedly died during a robbery. Please private message me if you know something but want to maintain anonymity. The reason I am asking is because of the following post on a blog called About My Life of Crime mylifeofcrime.wordpress.com/about/I am wondering if anyone has any information on the death of Bruce Whitesell in Preble County, Ohio. The obituary completely contradicts what I was told growing up, My grandmother is an honest woman, Preble County officials are quite corrupt, I was always told that the Sheriff’s office had something to do with his “murder”, his obituary says robbery attempt and I cannot find any other information on the incidentThank you! admin

I'd like to know what this poster's grandma told him. I think a Gayhart did time for it down in Lebanon. Somehow, I think he was a juvenile, but they tried him as an adult? That's about it. I am not even sure if it the same robbery. Sorry.

I am not even sure if it the same robbery. Sorry. Darryl Gayhart Todd Gartrell Vicky Gartrell Cordelia Erbaugh Whitesell Jack Paulk Cordelia was the housekeeper for an older couple. She tipped Bruce off that there were valuable coins in the house. Bruce hatched a plot to rob the people and enlisted the help of the Gartrells, Gayhart, and Paulk. Late one night Bruce and the gang set out to commit the robbery. He when to the couple's house feigning car trouble. I believe that they were reluctant to open the door and that he forced his way in. The husband was armed and he shot Bruce in the stomach. I believe his fellow criminals carried him away and he died on them. I am not sure whether or not Cordelia got any prison time, but I am certain that all of the rest of them did.

Nobody, thank you! I researched for a while but could find nothing more than an obituary. I only wish that the relative who was originally seeking information would post with the story as they know it....

I check the Palladiium-Item archive through the Morrison-Reeves Library Web site. All that popped up was info about his obit. I would imagine that an in-person archive search would yield more. If I find enough time I will investigate in person but it will be about another month before I can.

Yes, thanks, nobody. Reading that obituary, I thought Mr. Whitesell was the victim of the robbery!!! Who wrote that obit? I have seen causes of death in obits before, but usually accidents, sudden illness, long illness, unexpectedly, whatever. But, so specific...when the deceased is the perp? Your information really is quite sinister. They were a "gang". Robbing old folks. Can you share the couple's name?

Maybe I will find out more info when I get to the library. Bruce's wife, Cordelia, was their housekeeper, I do believe. Bruce was a spoiled, rotten brat and punk. I think he used to throw a lot of drinking and drugging parties. You'd be surprised at some of the people who thought he was "cool."

He died in a car crash returning home from working out of town. He was with Roger Best and someone unrelated to the Preble County area. The story goes that they trio was traveling somewhere between the location of the completed road job and home. The time was night and the territory was unknown to them. I can't remember who was driving, maybe the third person. They were loaded. The driver missed a turn and the car left the roadway. Boom, boom. Out goes the lights. All three died in the crash. Here are links to the obits of both Paulk and Best: www.pcdl.lib.oh.us/marriage/details.cfm?ID=97464www.pcdl.lib.oh.us/marriage/details.cfm?ID=97565

When they tried to force their way into the house, the old man opened up with a pistol, hitting Whitesell. The "gang" abandoned the badly wounded Whitesell in a field, and he bled to death. Paulk and Pee Wee Gayhart both did several years in prison.

People make stupid choices but their whole life is not defined just by those moments. He had sweet times with his kids who wish this night had gone much different. He made lots of stupid choices but he was also a lot more than that. Just wanted to put that out there. No arguments just clarifying

I knew Bruce in school. 4th through 6th. His mother was a wonderful person and he seemed like a good person. I remember him well and thought of him as a friend. I’ve often wondered what happened to him and how he got involved with such a terrible thing. It’s just very different to the person I knew. Maybe he got into the wrong crowd. I’m happy the people that they were attempting to rob were not hurt but I’m sad that Bruce died. I saw him at a softball game once with his wife and a cute little girl. They seemed happy and normal. I hope they are both okay. It’s just hard to understand.
